Xapo vs Wise: which one for a non-resident LLC?

⏱ Read: ~8 min 📅 Updated: September 2026 🎯 For: non-US/UK residents

The short answer: they aren't competitors, they do two different jobs. Wise is excellent for business banking paired with your LLC (multi-currency, real rate, Stripe), but we advise against it as an expat personal account: sometimes-abusive account closures, and a Wise account opened from your home country keeps your capital attached there. Xapo Bank is very accessible private banking for your personal money: real support with a dedicated agent, neobank-grade UX, multi-currency fiat and crypto (USDT, USDC, Bitcoin, even Lightning). For most LLC owners, the real answer is: Wise for the company, Xapo for you. Here's the breakdown, line by line.

The real answer: both, for different jobs

In practice, the most common setup among non-resident LLC owners looks like this:

In other words, "Xapo or Wise" is often the wrong question: it's "Wise for the company" and "Xapo for me." If your budget or profile only justifies one account, keep the simple rule: business banking with the LLC → Wise; a real expat personal bank (USD + crypto + private banking) → Xapo.

⚠️ Why we advise against Wise as an expat personal account

Two concrete reasons. First, personal account closures: Wise, like any fintech, can close or freeze a personal account, sometimes abusively and with no clear recourse. On operating money that circulates, that's a manageable risk; on your personal savings, it isn't. Second, the tax point people forget: a personal Wise account opened while you're tax-resident somewhere (say France) keeps your capital attached there. It's still treated as located in that country, which can blur a clean tax exit and feed a re-characterization risk. For an expat who genuinely wants their assets out, a real bank outside that country like Xapo (licensed in Gibraltar) is a cleaner setup. For business paired with a US LLC, though, Wise remains very solid: that's where it belongs.

⚠️ The key point about "bank" status

Wise is an electronic money institution, not a bank: your funds are safeguarded but without FDIC/FSCS-style deposit insurance, and Wise can freeze an account during a review, like any fintech. For operating money that circulates, that's acceptable. For personal savings that sit idle, a real licensed bank like Xapo (with a supervisor and a deposit guarantee) offers a more protective framework. That's exactly why we separate the two.

Frequently asked questions

Xapo or Wise: which should I choose?

They do different jobs. Wise is the account to run your LLC (multi-currency, real rate, Stripe, no annual fee). Xapo Bank is a real personal USD bank with Bitcoin, a Visa card and yield, but with a membership of about USD 1,000/year and open only to non-US/UK residents. For most non-resident LLC owners, the right answer is to use both: Wise for the company's money, Xapo for personal USD and Bitcoin.

Is Wise a bank?

No. Wise operates under an e-money license, not a full banking license. Your funds are safeguarded but do not benefit from FDIC/FSCS-style deposit insurance, and Wise pays no yield on balances. Xapo Bank, by contrast, is a real bank licensed in Gibraltar (GFSC), covered by the Gibraltar Deposit Guarantee Scheme.

Does Xapo Bank pay yield? How much does it cost?

About 3.35% APY on USD balances, plus several yield tiers on Bitcoin. Membership costs about USD 1,000/year, but the referral program (USD 500 in Bitcoin for you and for your referrer after 33 days of paid membership, no minimum) brings the net first-year cost to around USD 500. Details on our referral code page. Wise pays no yield but has no annual fee.

Can I use Xapo with a US LLC?

Xapo is a personal account, not a business one. You use it to receive owner draws in USD from the LLC's account and manage your savings and Bitcoin. The LLC's own account is opened at Wise Business or a US bank like Relay. The two complement each other, they don't compete.

Is Xapo available everywhere?

Xapo Bank is open only to those aged 18+ who are residents of neither the United States nor the United Kingdom. If you are a US or UK resident, sign-up is declined and Wise remains the solution. Wise is available in most countries, including for US residents.
